A Book of Dreams donations top $40,000
It’s the final week for A Book of Dreams, a fundraiser by The Modesto Bee in partnership with the Stanislaus Community Foundation.
So far, we have brought in roughly $40,000. That’s great news, but it’s well short of our goal of $70,000.
No matter how much comes in by the end of December, when the fundraiser concludes, the money will be going to some very worthy charities, such as the Tuolumne River Trust and MoPride.
The Tuolumne River Trust is raising money to remove the dangerous Dennett Dam.
Built in 1933, the Dennett Dam was intended to create Lake Modesto, a 97-acre water and recreation resort for local residents. But that never happened and instead the dam is an eyesore and a hazard, contributing to the deaths of three people who drowned in the area in the past five years, two of whom were children.
“It’s gotta go,” trust supporter Chris Guptill told Bee staff writer Ron Agostini. “The danger it poses to people, and especially kids, is serious.
“It’s such a beautiful stretch of the river. If we can restore it, people could enjoy it again.”
MoPride, just a couple of years old, is a nonprofit group that supports the area’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. The organization sponsors the annual Pride in the Park event in Modesto, but is looking to obtain a permanent home where it could offer services.
