Book of Dreams donations total $21,000 so far
Donations continue to arrive for The Modesto Bee’s A Book of Dreams fundraising effort, held in partnership with the Stanislaus Community Foundation.
As of this week, our generous readers have contributed $21,000 toward deserving agencies. That’s a wonderful start, but we still have a long way to go to meet our goal of $70,000. If you have donated, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. And if you haven’t, we ask you to consider.
Your money can go to any one or all of 10 deserving agencies, including the Stanislaus County Police Activities League and We Care of Turlock.

The Stanislaus County PAL reaches anywhere from 3,000 to 10,000 children per month, providing after-school programs at more than 30 elementary and middle school campuses around the county, from Modesto to Keyes to Grayson, Patterson, Westley, Westview Gardens Community Center in the Robertson Road area and Oakdale.
Stanislaus PAL runs a swimming program at the Regional Water Safety Training Center in Empire. It offers soccer and flag football in the fall, basketball in the winter and martial arts year-round. Kids in Keyes can play in the Junior Giants Baseball League. Around the county, PAL sponsors Cub Scouts activities.
“We have 165 to 170 paid employees, which makes us the second-largest Police Activities League in California, “ said Bret Silveira, Stanislaus PAL’s deputy director.
Scores of volunteers work with the children on everything from computer skills to arts and crafts at parks in Keyes, Grayson and in Modesto’s Airport Neighborhood. Volunteerism helps keep the costs down.
It’s all about making a difference in kids’ lives by taking a personal interest and providing activities they can enjoy in safe environments.
We Care, a Turlock nonprofit organization, provides hot meals, cold-weather shelter and transitional housing to homeless men.
The shelter, which houses 49 people, sometimes has to turn men away on the coldest nights of the winter. Organizers would like to expand the shelter to year-round use.
