Dental care access is expanding in Modesto as changes to Medi-Cal eligibility leave more Central Valley residents underinsured or uninsured.

Formerly known as Livingston Community Health, Lumira Healthcare launched a new dental program at its Modesto Orangeburg Clinic. It is designed to meet patients where they are, serving those with Medi-Cal, private insurance and no coverage through a sliding-fee scale and application support.

“Access to dental care is essential to overall health, yet too many families in the Central Valley face real barriers to getting the care they need, especially as coverage changes create new uncertainty,” Chief Executive Officer for Lumira Healthcare Leslie Abasta said in a press release. “This program is about meeting patients where they are, ensuring they have access to affordable, high-quality care, and supporting our community through a period of transition so no one falls through the cracks.”

On Wednesday, a free community open house was held at the Orangeburg clinic, joined by healthcare leaders, policymakers and community members including Modesto Mayor Sue Zwahlen.

The event included clinic tours, opportunities to meet providers and a moderated panel discussion to address growing gaps in care and explore solutions.

The panel was moderated by Legacy Health Endowment Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey Lewis and focused on dental access in the region, systemic barriers, policy shifts and the role local providers play in supporting communities.

Besides dental care, Lumira also provides medical and behavioral health services through its network of clinics across the Central Valley.
