Violent weekend in west Modesto leaves 1 dead, 5 injured

A man was fatally stabbed early Sunday in a violent weekend in west Modesto, in which four other people were wounded in shootings and a woman was assaulted.

A Police Department news release identified the stabbing victim as 43-year-old Al Lee Jones of Modesto.

Department spokeswoman Heather Graves said in an interview that emergency workers were sent to a residence in the 100 block of Roselawn Avenue about 2 a.m. to respond to a call that a man was not breathing.

She said that when the workers arrived, they found the man on the front porch and that he had been stabbed multiple times. They started lifesaving measures and called police.

Jones was taken to a hospital, where he died. Graves said there was a party at the residence and investigators believe the stabbing is the result of a fight at the party. She said police have detained several people, but no arrests had been made as of early Sunday evening.

The news release states the other people injured over the weekend did not sustain life-threatening injuries.

There were two shootings on Spruce Street that wounded three men and a woman. Police believe the shootings are related but have not identified any suspects or a motive.

In the first shooting, officers were sent to a home in the 200 block of Spruce Street about 4 p.m. Saturday on a report of gunshots. They found a man who had been shot in the leg, another man who had been shot in the abdomen and a woman who had been shot in the leg. They were taken to the hospital.

In the second shooting, officers responded to the 200 block of Spruce Street about 2:30 p.m. Sunday on a report of gunshots. They said a man in a car reported being shot in the arm and neck by someone in another vehicle. He was taken to the hospital.

And about 3:30 p.m. Sunday, officers responded to a report of an assault at a residence in the 400 block of South Washington Street. Officers found a woman who had been struck over the head with a glass object. She sustained a significant cut and was taken to the hospital.

Officers have identified the suspect in the assault as 32-year-old Leona Warner of Modesto, according to the news release.
