Merced Barnes and Noble to close in January

Corporate officials with Barnes and Noble on Wednesday announced they expect to close their 1720 W. Olive Ave. location by January.

The announcement came via e-mail from David Deason, vice president of development at Barnes and Nobles.

"The current lease expires at the end of January, 2014 and we have made numerous attempts to engage in a dialogue with the landlord to extend the lease, without a response," Deason said in the e-mail.

"We’ve been pleased to have served our Merced customers over the last ten years and we will continue to serve them on Barnes & Noble.com and at the Modesto and Fresno Barnes & Noble locations.” Reporter Thaddeus Miller is covering the story, and his full report will be in Thursday's Sun-Star.
