CVS store about to open in Modesto
CVS will open its new Modesto pharmacy Sunday at McHenry and Briggsmore avenues.
Its old store across the street will close at 6 p.m. Saturday, and the staff and all prescriptions will move to the new facility.
The new CVS was built where Mallard's Restaurant once stood, anchoring the corner of McHenry Village at 1700 McHenry Ave. The vacant restaurant was demolished last summer, and construction of the $1.71 million, 13,013-square-foot building was completed in December.
The old CVS at 1625 McHenry Ave., which used to be a Longs Drug Store, has 40,000 square feet. That building doesn't have the drive-through pharmacy access of the new store. CVS leases that building, and what will happen to it has not been announced.
While the region's recession has halted most retail construction, there's been a building flurry for drug stores.
On the corner across from the new CVS is a new Rite Aid, which opened in November.
CVS also opened a Turlock store last fall on Geer Road.
Walgreens also is building. It opened a Modesto store on Floyd Avenue last summer, and it has started construction in Oakdale on F Street.
