Nine from Modesto High receive Hall of Fame status
Modesto High School will induct nine graduates into its Hall of Fame during a ceremony March 13.
Honorees will include: Rosemarie Caraballo, who became a sergeant-major in the Army; Frank Damrell, now a federal judge in Sacramento; Jim Enochs, who became superintendent of Modesto City Schools and for whom Enochs High School is named; Karl Finch, who went on to play in the NFL and later coached basketball at Modesto High; and Henry Solario, who became a golf pro.
The list also includes Charles Dexter "Deck" Hogin, a longtime musician who died in December; Milford Olson, who became Downey High School's first principal; Chuck Hughes, a longtime Downey High football coach; and Andrew Toti, an inventor who registered more than 500 patents. Olson and Hughes died in 2007, Toti in 2005.
Sharon Arpoika of Oakdale will be honored for her 35 years of service at the Stanislaus County Library. She will receive a certificate of appreciation during Tuesday's board of supervisors meeting, which begins at 9 a.m. in the basement chamber at Tenth Street Place, 1010 10th St., Modesto
Former Modesto resident Ginny Brush recently received the 2009 Citizen of the Year Award, presented by the Santa Barbara Downtown Organization. Brush is the executive director of the Santa Barbara County Arts Commission.
She grew up on a ranch on the county's West Side and graduated from Ceres High in 1966 before going on to the University of California at Santa Barbara. She taught art for 15 years before embarking on a second career as an art director and designer for an ad marketing firm in Santa Barbara. She now is executive director of the arts commissions for the city and county of Santa Barbara.
Her mother, Dixie Brush, and brother Bill Brush still live on Brush Lane west of Modesto.
Livingston's Amarpreet Kandola, a junior Agricultural Business major at California State University, Stanislaus, will represent the university Feb. 18-19 at the Department of Agriculture's 2010 Agricultural Outlook Forum in Arlington, Va. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack and other top agriculture officials and leaders are expected to participate in the forum. Kandola also takes agriculture classes at Merced College and is active on his family's Livingston ranch, where they grow sweet potatoes, peaches and almonds.
Three of Sutter Health's Central Valley Region health facilities -- Memorial Hospital Los Banos, Memorial Medical Center and Sutter Gould Medical Foundation -- have been recognized by the California Integrated Waste Management Board's 2009 Waste Reduction Awards Program for their efforts to reduce the waste that goes into local landfills. This year's honorees diverted more than 2 million tons of material from landfills, resulting in a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and saving more than $100 million in operating costs.
