UPDATE: Bicyclist fatally struck by Amtrak train in Stanislaus County

A man on a bicycle died Tuesday morning when he was struck by a southbound Amtrak train in Empire, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Just after 8 a.m., the man, riding east on Second Street, went around the downed railroad crossing arm and into the path of the train, said CHP Officer Thomas Olsen.

The man was identified by the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office as 27-year-old Nicholas Butler. He died at the scene.

The train came to a stop between Second and Santa Fe Avenue and blocked Yosemite Boulevard for about two hours.
