New editor named for The Modesto Bee
Brian Clark was named editor of The Modesto Bee on Friday.
Clark, 55, replaces Joe Kieta, who was hired last month as editor at The Fresno Bee.
"Under Brian’s online leadership, The Bee has been among McClatchy's leaders in digital audience growth in recent years,” said Lauren Gustus, regional editor of McClatchy’s West Region. "He has demonstrated his adept digital skill in helping editors, reporters and photographers navigate McClatchy’s initiatives tied to video, social media and new publishing platforms."
Clark was The Bee's senior editor for digital.
"I'm honored to be given the reins of an extremely hard-working and talented newsroom," said Clark. "We've seen a tremendous amount of change through the years on the digital side in how we do our jobs and distribute our content. One thing that hasn't changed is the importance of quality journalism and the impact it can have.
"My mission is to connect us with the community, and help lead the important discussions that will strengthen its future."
Clark began his career as sports editor at the Turlock Journal in 1987. In 1989, he was hired as sports page designer and columnist at the Las Vegas Review Journal. In 1990, he joined The Bee as a sports copy editor and columnist. Since his arrival, he's worked in various positions, including sports editor and assistant city editor, leading a team of reporters covering health, water, the environment and growth.
In 2007, he was named online news editor and has been most recently focused on audience growth and breaking news coverage.
“Brian is deeply committed to serving this community with quality and meaningful journalism. His experience and digital leadership will help us continue to transform how we communicate with and engage our readers," said Tim Ritchey, general manager of The Bee.
Born and raised in Berkeley, Clark attended San Diego State University, where he graduated in 1986 with a bachelor's degree in journalism and a minor in political science.
He lives in Modesto with his wife, Pat. They have a son in college.
