As it closes in on 15 years since Laci Peterson was reported missing, the disappearance and murder of the Modesto mother-to-be continues to inspire interest with yet another television special set to debut this week.

Investigation Discovery will debut "Scott Peterson: An American Murder Mystery" on Wednesday evening at 8. It's at least the third television show to look at the case just this year.

Laci Peterson was eight months pregnant when her husband, Scott, said he returned home from a fishing trip to find her missing from their Covena Avenue home on Christmas Eve 2002. A massive search ensued, with authorities combing nearby East La Loma Park, where Laci Peterson was believed to have taken the couple's dog for a walk. Family and friends set up a volunteer center at a local hotel, where fliers and maps would be distributed and searches planned.

In January, 2003, police introduced Amber Frey at a press conference. The Fresno massage therapist told reporters she had a relationship with Scott Peterson, who told her he had "lost" his wife. Suspicion turned to Scott Peterson, who eventually was arrested near San Diego. He was tried in a Redwood City courtroom after the trial was moved due to publicity.

According to the website, the special includes interviews with many of those involved in the case, including Laci's stepfather, Ron Grantski; Scott's ex-girlfriend, Amber Frey; and Laci's friends, Stacey Boyers-Birdsong, Lori Ellsworth-Haints and Rene Tomlinson. Producers say they also interviewed Modeseto police detectives Jon Buehler and Al Brocchini, as well as Cliff Gardner, Scott Peterson's appellate attorney.

On Christmas Eve in 2002, 911 dispatchers in Modesto received a particularly harrowing call from local resident Ron Grantski — his 27-year-old, expecting stepdaughter, Laci Peterson, is missing. Investigators and family frantically search for the pregnant woman, retracing Laci's every move in hopes of finding the missing mother-to-be and her unborn son, Conner. Laci's college sweetheart husband, Scott, chronicles the day for police; but when details don't quite add up, detectives turn their suspicions on him.

"The disappearance and murder of Laci Peterson and her unborn son, Conner, is, perhaps, one of the most heart-breaking, traumatic true stories of all time," said Henry Schleiff, group president of Investigation Discovery, American Heroes Channel and Destination America. "This latest installment of ‘An American Murder Mystery’ will transport our viewers back to each pivotal moment of the investigation and trial, unraveling a very distorted web of lies that reveals the monster Scott Peterson really is."
