In brief: Fashion week is coming to the Central Valley

New York, Paris, Milan, Modesto. A fashion week is coming to the Central Valley.

A group of Modesto marketing, style and management experts are coming together to put on the first Modesto Fashion Week, Wednesday-Sunday, Sept. 14-18. The multiday downtown event will include a series of fashion-themed events. It will start with a screening of the Audrey Hepburn film “Funny Face” at the State Theatre on Sept. 14, followed by an Art of Fashion display at various downtown locations as part of the Third Thursday Art Walk on Sept. 15. A Color Your Canvas fashion show at The Century is Sept. 16; a Modesto Style beauty and fashion forum at Greens is Sept. 17; and a mixer to close out the week is at Ralston’s Goat on Sept. 18.

Admission ranges from free to $8 for the film to $50 for the fashion show. Organizers of the event said their mission is help eradicate the negative mentality some have about living in the Central Valley. For more information, visit www.modestofashionweek.com.

Blue Tango Project

Blue Tango Project is playing a benefit show in Patterson this weekend. Blue Tango Project is a collaboration between Argentine singer and Latin Grammy nominee Maria Volonte and California harmonica player Kevin Carrel Footer. They specialize in folk, Latin blues and traditional music from South America. The house concert will donate a portion of its proceeds to the California Women’s Music Festival. Show starts at 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13. Reservations are required and location will be given once confirmed. Tickets are $20. Stand Up for Charity

The ongoing Stand Up for Charity Comedy series returns the the Queen Bean on Friday, Aug. 12. The comedy show is hosted by Modesto comic A.J. DeMello. Headlining will be Sacramento Punchline alum Javon Whitlock. Also on the bill will be comics Natalie Starr, Mike Van Veenendaal and Bill Wallis. The show starts at 8 p.m. and admission is free, but any donations will be given to the Modesto Society for Disabilities.

Carnegie Arts Center gala

Tickets are on sale now for the Carnegie Arts Center’s annual gala. This year the event celebrates “Childhood Classics.” Festivities include cocktails and dinner as well as live music and dancing to swing classics from the Joe Mazzaferro Quintet. Live and silent auctions and a raffle will also be part of the fundraising event. Early bird tickets are $125 per person until Monday, Aug. 15. After that individual tickets are $150.
