New Gallo Center shows

Acoustic duo Rodrigo y Gabriela have gained international acclaim for their blend of metal, jazz and world music. The twosome of Rodrigo Sanchez and Gabriela Quintero have been playing together for more than 15 years. Divas of Drag fundraiser
MoPRIDE, the group that puts on the annual Pride in the Park celebration, will hold its second annual Divas of Drag fundraiser this month.
The benefit will raise funds for the annual lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender pride festivities at Graceada Park each late summer, early fall. The nonprofit MoPRIDE took over running the event in 2014 and held its first drag fundraiser the following year. This year the event will be themed “Vegas Show Girls: Fierce, Funny & Fabulous” and hosted by local personalities Mizz Monique Mychaels and Katalina Zambrano.
The fundraiser will include no-cash casino gaming, food & drink, raffles and, of course, drag performances. Tips given to the performers will go toward the nonprofit, and the biggest tip-getter will be named Top Diva 2016.
Show starts at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 11, at the Prospect Theater Project in downtown Modesto. Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door. A limited number of VIP $30 tickets are also available. For more information, call 209-985-9220 or visit www.mopride.org.
‘Vaxxed’ screening
A controversial anti-vaccine documentary that was pulled from New York’s Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year is making its way to Modesto’s State Theatre.
“Vaxxed: From Cover-Up to Conspiracy” will screen June 14, 15 and 17 at the downtown Modesto venue. The film was written and directed by now discredited British medical researcher Andrew Wakefield. His 1998 study that claimed there was a link between the MMR vaccine to autism has since been debunked by many major scientific publications, including the esteemed Journal of the American Medical Association.
Wakefield is both one of the main on-camera subjects and the director of the film project. In 2010 he was struck from the General Medical Council, which registers all practicing medial professional in the United Kingdom. At the Modesto premiere June 14 one of the film’s other subjects, ex-pharmaceutical sales rep Brandy Vaughan will do a Q&A session with the audience after the screening.
Tickets are $8-$10. Call 209-527-4697 or visit www.thestate.org.
