‘A Streetcar Named Desire’
The famed Tennessee Williams play “A Streetcar Named Desire” gets a new musical treatment in the Townsend Opera production. The operatic adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Southern drama will be helmed by critically acclaimed director Brad Dalton, with star soprano Carrie Hennessey as Blanche DuBois and baritone Dan Kempson as Stanley Kowalski. Kempson recently was nominated for a Grammy Award for best opera recording.

‘Pulp Fiction’
The quintessential Quentin Tarantino film, “Pulp Fiction,” comes to the State Theatre as part of the Modesto Film Society Cinema Club series. The 1994 indie crime movie stars John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Uma Thurman and Bruce Willis, among others. It took home the Oscar for best original screenplay.

‘Rain: A Tribute to the Beatles’
Spend a hard day’s night with the Fab Four. The former Broadway show “Rain: A Tribute to the Beatles” brings its national tour to the Central Valley. The show features a tribute group performing a wide array of the group’s songs with multimedia content and more displayed on screen. The performers perform a note-for-note performance incorporating early hits to later classics from The Beatles.

Ripon Arts League
The Ripon Arts League continues its 2014-15 concert season with songs from the golden age of cinema. Laura Ellis will perform songs from some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, including Judy Garland, Doris Day and Shirley Jones. The show celebrates the leading ladies with costumes and song.

CSU Stanislaus children’s production
The California State University, Stanislaus, department of theater presents the children’s show “Beanie and the Bamboozling Horror Machine.” The show, by Roy C. Booth and Bob May, is the sequel to the short play “Beanie and the Bamboozling Book Machine.” The piece includes fairy tale characters including Hansel and Gretel and Snow White, as well as classic villains such as Dracula, Frankenstein’s monster and others.

Sunday Arts Lecture
The Carnegie Arts Center continues its Sunday Arts Lecture with a talk about American author Clare Boothe Luce. “Unusual Efforts: Clare Boothe Luce and Her Women” will be given by Merced College theater instructor Carin Heidelbach. Luce is known for her hit 1936 hit play “The Women,” which featured an all-female cast. Heidelbach will direct a Prospect Theater Project production of the show starting Feb. 6.
