Dead Man Walking

Townsend Opera presents a production of “Dead Man Walking,” based on the book and film of the same name about Sister Helen Prejean. The Catholic nun became a high-profile death penalty activist after working with condemned prisoners. San Francisco-based mezzo-soprano Laura Krumm will portray Prejean, a role which won Susan Sarandon an Oscar.

Livingston Taylor

Singer-songwriter Livingston Taylor, brother of famed musician James Taylor, will perform at an Uncle Lonny Presents show at Modesto’s State Theatre. Taylor combines folk, country, bluegrass and more in his music. His hits include “I Will Be in Love with You,” and “I’ll Come Running.” Concert benefits Hope Haven West and the Modesto Gospel Mission.

‘The Sirens’

The play “The Sirens,” about five women who are domestic violence victims, will be presented to benefit the Haven Women’s Center of Stanislaus County. The show is a collaboration between the Enochs High HARRT club, Haven, Delta Kappa Gamma and AAUW. A reception for Haven founders Pat Paul and Yvonne Allen will precede the May 6 show.

MUMFest Finale

The Modesto Unplugged Music Festival ends a month of programming with its final show. The finale will feature the Bay Area-based World Harmony Chorus as well as Central Valley acts the Funstrummers Ukulele Band of Modesto, Oakdale High School steelpan ensemble Steelin’ The Beat and a pops-style orchestra led by Marie Maxfield.

Playhouse Merced Preview

Playhouse Merced unveils its 23rd season with an evening of sneak-peek music from its upcoming slate of shows.
