In brief: Poetry for Peace set for Friday, April 29
Top off National Poetry Month with the Poetry for Peace event on Friday, April 29.
The free community gathering is hosted by the Modesto Peace/Life Center and will showcase local poets and artists. The public is invited to participate and read poems or perform spoken word that touches on the topic of peace and/or justice.
The show has about 10 performers lined up and is open to others.

International Jazz Day
Merced celebrates International Jazz Day with a free show featuring the Ernie Bucio Little Big Band.
Music of Tom Hoffmann Presents the “Mercy Lit Up!” show at 7 p.m. Friday, April 29, at the University of California, Merced’s Lakireddy Auditorium.
The family-friendly show will feature jazz standards and original works by guitarist, professor and composer Tom Hoffmann, among others. Admission and parking are free. Call 209-813-4061.
Central California Art Showcase
The winners of the third annual joint Central California Art Showcase have been awarded.
The spring exhibition, which runs simultaneously at the Carnegie Arts Center in Turlock and the Central California Art Association’s Mistlin Gallery in Modesto, opened April 1 and will run through Friday, May 27. This year, 152 works were accepted from more than 75 artists throughout Central California.
Jurors named Modesto artist Brian Swander’s painting “Eclipse Market” best of show. The exhibition, which includes paintings, drawings, sculpture, photography, metal work, mixed media and more, is free and open to the public at both locations.
The other winners were: awards of excellence, Meisha Grichuhin and Jane Zich; awards of distinction, Robert Behee, Christine Johnson, Christine Obers and Phil Vance; awards of merit, Steve Bauman, Tom Duchscher, Dan Petersen and Monique Wales; honorable mentions, Timothy Brown Jr., Barbara Gill, Rick Ingraham, Michelle Park, Linda Sawyer and Zoe Toscano.
