Modesto Symphony Orchestra

Violinist Angelo Xiang Yu performs Camille Saint-Saëns’ Violin Concerto No. 3 with the Modesto Symphony Orchestra Friday and Saturday, April 15-16, at the Gallo Center. The concerto, composed in 1880, is a joyful piece, Yu said. Also on the program will be Antonin Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9 “From the New World” and Alexander Miller’s “Scherzo Crypto.”

MAPS on climate change

Modesto Area Partners in Science continues its programs with a symposium offering “Everything You Wanted to Know about Climate Change but Were Afraid to Ask.” This evening’s program features presentations by Daniel Kammen, distinguished professor of energy at UC Berkeley and a climate adviser for the Obama administration; and Linda Rudolph, director of the Public Health Institute’s Climate Change and Public Health Project. A question-and-answer session will follow.

Focusing on songs collected by folklorist and field recording pioneer Alan Lomax, singer and banjo player Jayme Stone has reimagined traditional music in his “Lomax Project.” The repertoire includes Bahamian sea shanties to African American a cappella songs and more. The Modesto Community Concert Association brings Stone to the Gallo Center on Sunday.

Taste of Calaveras

Mother Lode wineries and restaurants, chefs, musicians and plein-air artists gather for a celebration of the best of Calaveras culture in the breezeway and network of wine caves at Ironstone Vineyards. Taste of Calaveras features cooking demonstrations, wine tasting, educational wine and food pairing seminars and a silent auction.

‘Earth’ on screen

The State Theatre marks the coming Earth Day and its focus on our planet with a screening Thursday of “Earth” from award-winning British producer/director Alastair Fothergill. MJC powwow

Modesto Junior College hosts the 17th annual intertribal powwow on Sunday, April 17, sharing the culture and traditions of American Indian people with the community. The event features a traditional opening ceremony, and the day includes traditional singers and dancers, arts, crafts, jewelry, painting, beadwork and more, along with food available for purchase.
