Modesto’s Mistlin Gallery and the Carnegie Arts Center in Turlock join for the third time in a collaborative art exhibit dubbed the Central California Art Showcase.

The spring juried exhibit, April 1 to May 27, shows off the work of regional artists in a variety of media and is designed to be seen in its entirety at both galleries.

A panel of jurors accepted 150 works from 338 entries for the show, which curators from both galleries divide to hang at the Mistlin and the Carnegie. “The goal is to create the most meaningful viewing experience through comparison and juxtaposition of the works at each venue,” a news release said.

The exhibition includes pieces by 76 artists from throughout the Central California region. Judges for the 2016 showcase were Gerald Boyd, painter and pastel artist; Cara Weston, photographer; and William F. Wilson, cultural arts manager of the Grand Theatre Center for the Arts in Tracy.

Second centennial pop-up at Carnegie

The second of Carnegie Arts Center’s Centennial Pop-Up shows features work by video and new media artist Jessica Gomula-Kruzic in “Modesto Reborn.” The shows are part of the yearlong anniversary celebration in the renovated historic library space at the Turlock arts center.

The multimedia video installation “present viewers the opportunity to explore and create an imaginary future for our region,” Carnegie Director Lisa McDermott said in a news release. “Branching story lines, digitally created visions of a ‘new’ Modesto cityscape and viewer interaction are all part of the experience.”

Gomula-Kruzic is professor of art, with a specialization on video and time-based media, at California State University, Stanislaus, and the director of the Building Imagination Center in downtown Turlock.

Each of the pop-up shows is on view for 10 days; the Gomula-Kruzic show will be on display Friday, April 8 – with a reception for the artist 7-9 p.m. Friday – to Sunday, April 17. The reception coincides with the Carnegie’s monthly Family Friday event with related art activities for children ages 6 and up. Admission to the exhibition at the Carnegie, 250 N. Broadway Ave. in Turlock, is free.

The next Carnegie Pop-Up will be in August.
