Sister Helen Prejean, known for her book and the subsequent film “Dead Man Walking,” will speak in Modesto this week in advance of an upcoming operatic production of her work. The Catholic nun is a noted death penalty reform advocate. Townsend Opera will stage “Dead Man Walking” starting Friday, April 29, at the Gallo Center.

Half the Sky
An upcoming benefit screening and panel discussion will help area women’s nonprofit groups. The event will show the documentary “Half the Sky,” which highlights the oppression faced by women and efforts to empower them around the world. Funds raised will help the Haven Women’s Center of Stanislaus, Without Permission and Successful Women of Central Valley.

B93 Spring Fling
Big names are coming to support Camp Jack Hazard at its annual B93 FM Spring Fling benefit. The show supporting the High Sierra adventure camp for area youths will feature former “American Idol” finalist Chris Daughtry and up-and-coming singer Daya. Also playing will be Modesto Area Music Association Award-winning local artist Josh Rosenblum.

Music at the GMC
The Music at the GMC concert series continues with a trio from Amsterdam. The multi-instrumentalist trio Snowapple will play the joint Modesto Unplugged and ModestoView event. The group’s three Dutch female performers play a mix of pop and folk music. The group released its second album this year and have toured Europe and the United States.

‘Elephant Man’
The Modesto Junior College Theatre Department presents the drama the “The Elephant Man.” The play is based on a real-life man, called John Merrick in the piece, who has a rare skin and bone disease and became a sideshow attraction. Noah Thompson will play Merrick with Billy Ollis as Frederick Treves.

‘The Lion King’
Modesto’s State Theatre continues its Sensory Friendly Film series with a screening of the Disney classic “The Lion King.” The program, run in partnership with the Stanislaus County Office of Education, is geared toward families with children on the autism spectrum. Staff of the Central Valley Autism Project will attend, and a parent social follows the screening.
