Night at the Great Valley Museum
The finishing touches for the Great Valley Museum are being made in time for Saturday’s Night at the Museum Inaugural Gala fundraiser. The original director of the museum, Joe Medeiros, will speak on its history, Modesto Poet Laureate Gillian Wegener will read a poem written for the event and MJC English professor Lillian Villee will give a reading. While gala-goers will be able to tour the exhibits, the museum’s full opening will wait a few weeks longer as docents are trained and all the final pieces placed.

Quilt & Textiles Arts Show
The 2015 Heart of the Valley Quilt and Textile Arts Show returns this weekend to Modesto Centre Plaza. Billed as the Central Valley’s largest quilt show, the event will include quilts, clothing, vendor displays, merchandise, demonstrations and more. Held every other year, the shows have been offered since 1980 by Modesto’s Country Crossroads Quilt Guild. Among the featured artists will be quilters Louise Nelson and Paddy Shopher. Special exhibits this year include “Row Round Robin” quilts and interpretations of the Modesto Archway and its “Water, Wealth, Contentment, Health” message.

“Secret Agent” man
A “Secret Agent Man” will help Royal Family Kids’ Camp raise funds for area foster children. Rock ’n’ roll veteran Johnny Rivers will perform a benefit show tonight for the Stanislaus County organization at the Gallo Center for the Arts. Rivers rose up the rock charts starting in the 1960s with a string of radio hits, including his cover of Chuck Berry’s “Memphis,” “Mountain of Love,” “The Seventh Son,” “Midnight Special,” “Poor Side of Town” and “Summer Rain.” He is perhaps best known for his rock staple “Secret Agent Man.” Released in 1966, the song was used as the opening theme for the TV series “Secret Agent,” which ran from 1964 to 1966.

“Bullshot Crummond”
A parody of low-budget 1930s British detective movies continues at Modesto’s Center Stage Conservatory. “Bullshot Crummond” features villain Otto von Bruno and his evil mistress, Lenya, who crash their plane in the English countryside and kidnap Professor Fenton, who has discovered a formula for making synthetic diamonds. Hero Bullshot Crummond is called to the rescue.

“Streetcar” party
A preview party Saturday at the State Theatre will herald the upcoming Townsend Opera production of “A Streetcar Named Desire.” Live music will be offered by soprano Carrie Hennessey and Re-Assemblers of Whimsy. Hennessey will star as Blanche in the Townsend production on Jan. 23 and 25. Also planned for the event is a screening of the original “Streetcar” film starring Vivien Leigh and Marlon Brando.

Piano master
Modern jazz piano master Marcus Roberts brings his music to the Gallo Center for the Arts tonight. Formerly with the Wynton Marsalis Band, Roberts also is an active composer and arranger and has released CDs including “New Orleans Meets Harlem, Volume I,” “Celebrating Christmas,” “Deep in the Shed: A Blues Suite” and “Across the Imaginary Divide.”
