Arts Briefs: Opera company brings ‘Dead Man Walking’ author to Modesto

Townsend Opera has announced Sister Helen Prejean, known for her book “Dead Man Walking,” will speak at Gallo Center for the Arts on Monday, March 28.

The Catholic nun is a noted death penalty reform advocate. Her book was turned into an Oscar-winning film by the same name, starring Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn.

Townsend Opera will present an opera based on her book and the film Friday, April 29, and Sunday, May 1, at the Gallo Center. Prejean will talk about her experiences providing spiritual guidance to death row inmates.

Carnegie Center centennial

The Carnegie Center for the Arts continues its centennial celebration with a groundbreaking commemoration and open house on Saturday, Feb. 27.

The city of Turlock-sponsored celebration honors the date in February 1916 when ground was broken on what would become the Carnegie Library. Guests are invited to visit the galleries. Art and dance demonstrations will go on throughout the day. Artwork by students from local schools envisioning what life will be like in the next 100 years will be on display.

Young @ Art show

Area students are invited to submit their works to the upcoming Young @ Art show.

Young artists in preschool through high school can enter the 40th annual exhibit from the Central California Art Association. Work can be submitted in 11 categories including drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, short video and more. Prizes will be awarded in each category.

Entries will be received from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27. The exhibit will be March 1-19 at the downtown Modesto Mistlin Gallery. The award ceremony and reception will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, March 19. For more information, call 209-529-3369 or visit www.ccartassn.org.

Manteca Kindred Arts

Manteca Kindred Arts Concert Association continues its season with a concert by pianist Allegra Chapman on Sunday, Feb. 28.

Chapman is a graduate of the Bard Conservatory of Music, the Juilliard School and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. The show starts at 3 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Manteca. Gottschalk Music Concert Band

The Gottschalk Music Concert Band will be joined by pianist John Hillebrandt for a special show Monday, Feb. 29.

Pianist and composer Hillebrandt retired from California State University, Stanislaus, in 2011 after a career as a staff accompanist and lecturer. He will perform “Rhapsody in Blue” by George Gershwin.
