Arts Briefs: ModSpot hosts its first live music show
ModSpot, the collaboration between the Peer Recovery Art Project, Modesto View and Stanislaus Magazine, holds its first live music show Friday, Dec. 18.
The new venue, in the old downtown Modesto Camera Center at 1220 J St., opened earlier this year and recently obtained its entertainment permit. The site hosts a variety of community projects and programs throughout the year. The concert will feature the John Clifton Blues Band with opening act The VooDoo Killers featuring Tony Trevino & The Meeker Boyz.
Doors will open at 6 p.m., with music from 7 to 10 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door, and proceeds benefit Peer Recovery Art Project. Call 209-985-0467 or visit www.peerrecoveryartproject.org.
Singalong ‘Messiah’
St. James Concert Series presents its annual singalong “Messiah” concert in Columbia on Sunday, Dec. 20.
The seasonal show invites the public to join in a performance of George Frideric Handel’s “Messiah.” Performing will be members of the Sonora Master Chorale, featured soloists and accompanist Diane Day. The featured soloists will be soprano Linda Carter, alto Lisa Westermann, tenor Carl Rudolph and bass/baritone Ronald Randall, who will also conduct.

Manteca Kindred Arts Series
The Manteca Kindred Arts Concert Association continues its current season with a show by regional favorites Golden Bough on Sunday, Dec. 20.
The Celtic trio celebrates its 35th anniversary year. The ensemble has toured internationally and is known for its mix of Celtic harp, violin and vocal music. The holiday show beings at 3 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Manteca.

‘Frozen’ singalong
The cold shouldn’t bother you anyway because you’ll be warm and toasty at the Carnegie Arts Center’s Holiday Pajama Party: “Frozen” Singalong this weekend.
The Turlock event is part of the center’s ongoing free Family Friday series. Enjoy hot cocoa, cookies and popcorn while screening and singing along to the popular animated Disney film.

Hip-hop dance benefit
The Modesto-based teenage Weirdos Dance Crew is hosting the hip-hop dance show and benefit “Heating Up Modesto” on Saturday, Dec. 19, at the State Theatre.
Local dance groups are invited to attend and participate in the all-ages event. The show also will feature performances by the Weirdos Dance Crew, All Time High and headliners the young Roseville-based dance crew Dem Bague Boyz.
Proceeds from the event will benefit The Salvation Army. Donations of warm coats and blankets will also be accepted.
The show starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $7.

Mistlin Gallery show
Catch the final week of the Central California Art Association “Home for the Holidays” members show.
The Mistlin Gallery exhibit features original artwork including paintings, jewelry, pottery, textiles and more. The show runs through Wednesday, Dec. 23. The gallery is open from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and from noon to 4 p.m. Sundays.
