In brief: YES will have an ‘Autumn Blast’

The YES Company invites the public to its new Autumn Broadway Blast.

The benefit show by the Youth Entertainment Stage Company Ambassadors will begin at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15, in the Mildred Perkins Elementary multipurpose room. The program includes Broadway favorites and Christmas singalongs. A dessert bar with coffee, tea and hot chocolate will be included, and a raffle will include the opportunity to win tickets to YES Company’s 25th anniversary production set for the summer of 2016.

Audience members also are asked to bring nonperishable food items for the group’s Community Canned Food Drive. Tickets are $10 adults; $7 for children ages 3 to 12. For more information, visit www.yescompany.org, or purchase tickets at www.showtix4u.com.

Eduardus Halim

Acclaimed New York University professor and pianist Eduardus Halim will give a public recital at California State University, Stanislaus, this week.

The concert will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, at Snider Recital Hall on the Stanislaus State campus. Halim was a student of the great classical pianist and composer Vladimir Horowitz. His program will be the same he performed at the sold-out NYU Steinhardt’s 125th anniversary earlier this year. Halim also will give a public master class to select students Wednesday, Nov. 18, at the recital hall.

Denair Gaslight Conservatory

Starmites and the Denair Gaslight Theatre get into the holiday spirit with a presentation of “ ’Twas the Night Before Christmas,” starting this week.

The short play is based on the beloved Christmas story “A Visit from St. Nicholas.” It follows the journey of a little mouse named Rosie as she travels through Clement C. Moore’s holiday tale. Starmites is a teaching program offered by the Denair Gaslight Conservatory for students ages 3 through high school. Students from Modesto, Ceres, Denair, Hughson, Turlock and Hilmar are part of the production.

The show opens at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, and will run at 7 p.m. Friday-Saturday, Nov. 20-21, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 22, at the Denair Gaslight Theater. Tickets are $5.

MJC Visual Art Club exhibit

Modesto Junior College presents “Found,” an exhibition of artwork by students in the Visual Arts Club.

The public display includes a variety of artwork including multimedia, painting, sculpture, drawing and ceramics by art majors as well as students who are just beginning to study art. The exhibit will be up through Thursday, Dec. 3, in the MJC Art Gallery on East Campus. The gallery is open 10 a.m-5 p.m. Monday-Thursday, and admission is free. The artists reception will be from 5:30-7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 19, in the gallery. Call the MJC Art Gallery at 209-575-6819.

Funstrummers

The Funstrummers Ukelele Band of Modesto invites people to its eighth anniversary concert on Friday, Nov. 13.

Stand Up for Charity

Laugh for a good cause at the Stand Up For Charity Comedy Show on Friday, Nov. 13, at the Queen Bean Coffee House in Modesto.

The comedy series will raise funds for Haven Women’s Center of Stanislaus. A.J. DeMello hosts with headliner Pete Munoz. Also performing will be Jacoby Bruton, Shannon Murphy, Wendy M. Lewis, Danny Mendoza and David Stolowitz. Show starts at 8:20 p.m. Free admission, but donations will be accepted.

Black Irish Band

The prolific Black Irish Band celebrates the release of its 26th album this weekend.

The popular foothills group plays a mix of Celtic, Gold Rush and Old West folk music. Its new CD, “Give Us All Yer Whiskey,” features a mix of songs about miners and sailors.
