Arts briefs: Modesto Sound, MJC dance, more

The nonprofit recording studio Modesto Sound holds its annual fundraiser this weekend.

The organization, which offers recording, live sound services and job training for students ages 13 through 22, is bringing in Bay Area guitar legend Groovy Judy in Saturday, Sept. 19. The show will also feature local performers The High Voltage Band, Pacific Lung, Liliana Peau, Tristan Gianelli and more.

This is the group’s 10th year in operation. Earlier this year, the organization moved from its previous home at Gregori High School to a new space on Santa Barbara Avenue.

The Tropical Garden fundraiser starts at 9 p.m. at a private residence in the Wycliffe neighborhood. Suggested donation is $20 adults, $5 youths. Tickets include dinner and drinks. For more information, call 209-573-0533 or visit www.modestosound.com.

MJC dance program

The Modesto Junior College department of dance presents “So You Think You Can … Jam ’n Jive” starting this week.

The annual dance concert will follow the format of the popular reality TV show “So You Think You Can Dance.” Each featured guest has selected a style of jazz dance to choreograph and perform, from jazz funk, Broadway, contemporary, traditional, ’90s jazz, lyrical and more.

In addition to MJC’s Off-Balance Dancers, the high schools involved in this year’s Jam ’n Jive concert are Downey, Davis, Beyer, Gregori, Modesto and Central Catholic. Also performing are the private dance studios of 5678 Dance, Backstage Dance, Valley Oak School of Dance, Strut Performing Arts, The Dance Factory and The Dance Academy.

Shows are at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday, Sept. 23-26, in the main auditorium of the Performing and Media Arts Center on the east campus. Admission is $10 general, $8 for students and senior citizens. Call 209-575-6776.

Mistlin Gallery show

The Central California Art Association opened the new exhibit “Celebration of the Figure” at the Mistlin Gallery this week.

The show will run through Oct. 10 at the downtown Modesto gallery and feature wide and varied interpretations of the human figure. The exhibit’s public reception will be from 5-9 p.m. during the Third Thursday Art Walk on Thursday, Sept. 17.

Murphys Creek production

Murphys Creek Theatre presents the drama “Gods of Carnage” starting Friday, Sept. 18.

Jon Dambacher, producer and director of the Sonora Theatre Workshop, helms the play about two sets of parents whose children have had an altercation on a playground.

Rogers Neighborhood Park concert

The fourth annual “Think of Me” fundraiser Saturday, Sept. 19, will honor the memory of George Rogers and support the Rogers Neighborhood Park.

The evening will include music, poetry and remembrances featuring The Ratz, The Sensations and Home Grown. The event is from 5-9 p.m. at 1425 Church St., Modesto. George Thorogood concert

Blues rocker George Thorogood brings his “Bad to the Bone” sound to Stockton’s Bob Hope Theatre on Tuesday, Sept. 22.

Thorogood and his band, The Destroyers, are known for songs like “Move It on Over,” “Who Do You Love?” and “One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer.” Regional blues favorites Tommy Castro & the Painkillers will open the show.

New Gallo shows

The Gallo Center has added electric bluesman Charlie Musselwhite and country hitmaker Terri Clark to its new season.

Musslewhite, known for his blues harmonica playing, will be joined by the North Mississippi Allstars on Feb. 17. Canadian artist Clark, known for hits with songs like “Better Things to Do” and “When Boy Meets Girl,” plays March 2. Tickets are $29-$69 for either show and go on sale Friday, Sept. 18.
