The Summoning

The Summoning Halloween Street Party returns with more fun and frights. The 21-and-over event features 15 Halloween-themed party rooms, including entrance to a haunted house set up in the 11th Street garage. Take part in the $1,000 costume contests, a King and Queen of the Zombie Prom, and a jack-o’-lantern contest.

Marciachi Sol de Mexico

Mariachi king Jose Hernandez and his platinum-selling Sol de Mexico have been performing for more than 30 years. A fifth-generation mariachi musician, Hernandez’s roots trace back to the birthplace of mariachi – the state of Jalisco, Mexico. Since founding his troupe in 1981, he has recorded with Selena, Vicente Fernandez, Luis Miguel, Bryan Adams and The Beach Boys, and received four Grammy nominations.

‘The Lives of Others’

The Modesto Junior College Foundation and Associated Students of MJC are sponsoring a special screening of “The Lives of Others,” the 2006 Oscar winner for best foreign-language film. The 2006 German drama is about the monitoring of East Berlin by agents of the Stasi, the secret police. The screening coincides with the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Halloween Dance Party

Enjoy a performance by Central Valley groups The Wrong Doers, Willie Hines of the Lights and Red Jet Band and The Beernachos. This show is a benefit concert for the Center for Human Services. Complimentary beverages will be provided by the Dusty Bottoms Trail Runners club.

‘Little Shop of Horrors’

Just in time for Halloween, “Little Shop of Horrors” comes to the stage from the students at Downey High School. The musical, set in the 1950s, follows a hapless florist named Seymour who raises a man-eating plant. The show ran off-Broadway, then on Broadway, and was turned into a 1986 movie starring Rick Moranis and Steve Martin.

‘Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’

See the final weekend of “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” at Modesto Junior College. The theater department production is an adaptation of the 19th century horror story about a man and his murderous alter ego. MJC theater professor Michael Lynch wrote and directed the adaptation, and Tyrus Loveless plays the two leads.
