Arts Briefs: MCCA set to open season
The Modesto Community Concert Association opens its new season this weekend.
The Sunday afternoon concert series will kick off with John Denver tribute artist Jim Curry at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Gallo Center for the Arts. Curry had headlined the annual tribute to Denver held at the John Denver Memorial Tribute in Pacific Grove and is also the singing voice of the CBS TV movie “Take Me Home: The John Denver Story.”
The remainder of the 2015-16 season will have singer Jan Daley on Nov. 15, fusion baroque music band Red Priest on Jan. 17, the Columbia Kicks Big Band on March 20 and banjoist and composer Jayme Stone on April 17.

Alphonse Mucha exhibit
The Alphonse Mucha exhibit opens Sunday, Sept. 13, at the Carnegie Arts Center in downtown Turlock.
This will be the public debut of the show, “Alphonse Mucha: The Golden Age of Art Nouveau.” The exhibit will feature more than 70 original works by the famed Czech painter and decorative artist. His distinctive, romantic, flowing style – particularly the beautiful women who are a signature part of his aesthetic – is instantly recognizable from turn-of-the-20th century paintings, posters and advertising.
The show continues the Turlock art gallery’s annual presentation of a world-famous artists as part of its ongoing exhibits. The center has previously shown the works of Ansel Adams, Pablo Picasso, Edgar Degas and others. The art nouveau work of Mucha on display will include vintage lithographs, original drawings and paintings, books and advertising ephemera all from one of the largest private collections of his work.
The exhibit will run through Jan. 10 at the Carnegie Arts Center, 250 N. Broadway, in Turlock. The gallery will be open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesdays-Sundays and until 8 p.m. Fridays. Tickets are $10 general, $8 seniors/students, free to members. Call 209-632-5761 or visit www.carnegieartsturlock.org.
Modesto Architecture Festival
The eighth annual Modesto Architecture Festival begins its a nine-day run this weekend.
The event boasts 80 free events including exhibits, tours, movies and more. Each day will have both guided and self-guided tours of the city’s design district and various historical sites. An exhibit of rare panoramic photos of downtown Modesto from the 1930s also will be open to the public throughout the festival at the McHenry Museum.
Other highlights include the Architecture Film Night at the State Theatre Sept. 18 and Family Architecture Experience/Kid’s Workshop at the Stanislaus County Library Sept. 19.

Greg Vail and Slim Man
Smooth-jazz performers Greg Vail and Slim Man return to Modesto for a show Sept. 18.
The double bill of veteran smooth jazz vocalist Slim Man and saxophonist Vail also will feature percussionist Mombo Hernandez, keyboardist Tateng Katindig and Modesto drummer Dave Hawkes.
Show starts at 8 p.m. at the Barkin’ Dog Grill in downtown Modesto. The show is presented by John Griswold and Jerry Cooper. Tickets are $30 general, $40 prime seating. Call 209-543-4261.
Golden Bough
The popular regional Celtic group Golden Bough performs at Newman’s West Side Theatre on Friday, Sept. 11.
The group is celebrating its 35th anniversary year and performs traditional music from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, The Isle of Man, French Brittany and Spanish Galicia. Since forming in 1980, the band has released more than 30 recordings and performed internationally.
