In brief: New season of Sunday Afternoons on tap in Modesto

The Sunday Afternoons at CBS series opens its 24th season Sept. 27.

The monthly shows at Modesto’s Congregation Beth Shalom will run through March. The new season kicks off with the gypsy jazz string trio the Marc Atkinson Trio on Sept. 27.

The rest of the schedule will have shows by Rabbi Shalom, Rom and Friends on Oct. 18; Jaffa Road Nov. 8; Tom Rigney and Flambeau on Jan. 24; Grace Lieberman and Friends on Feb. 14; and Stephanie Cadman Trio on March 13.

Tickets are $75 for the season ($65 seniors/students), $25 for single tickets ($20 for seniors/students) and $7 for children ($5 for full season with adult purchase). For more information, call 209-571-6060 or visit www.sundaysatcbs.com.

Playhouse Merced

Playhouse Merced brings the popular musical “Evita” to the stage to start its new season.

The Andrew Lloyd Webber extravaganza about the rise of Argentinian first lady Eva Perón opens at 7:30 p.m. today and will run through Sept. 20.

“Evita” is directed by Rob Hypes with musical direction by Darrel Lingenfelter and stars Rachel Pearre as Eva Perón, G.B. Blackmon III as Che, Jesse Stofle as Augustin Magaldi and Joel Scott Shade as Juan Perón.

MJC art show

Modesto Junior College Art Gallery presents the exhibition “Post Rural Artists” starting this weekend.

The show features painting, photography, sculpture and other works by artists Trey Hill, Brad Allen, Noah Wilson, Kevin Bell, Nicole Pietrantoni, Edgar Smith, Matt Hamon and James Bailey. The work will explore the shifting idea of rural spaces. A free public reception with the artists will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 10 at the gallery. Refreshments will be served. The show will run through Sept. 24.

The MJC Art Gallery is located on East Campus, 435 College Ave., Modesto, and is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday. Admission is free. For more, call 209-575-6819.

Copperopolis Town Square

Copperopolis Town Square is closing out its Sounds of Summer concert series this weekend and launching a new one for September.

The free summer series started in May. The closing show will feature the Dive Bar Poets from 6-8 p.m. Saturday. A new Copper Concerts series will start in September and run each Saturday night in the month. The events are free and parking is $5 to benefit the 4-H and FFA.

Wild Roots

The singer-songwriter duo of the Wild Roots brings its tour into the region for a pair of shows.

The collaborative show features Josephine Johnson and Pi Jacobs. The show features both artists playing original songs.

The tour will bring the Wild Roots to Turlock’s Grizzly Rock Cafe at 9 p.m. Saturday; and Modesto’s Cafe Deva at 9 a.m. Sunday. Both shows are free.
