Heading to San Francisco for Pride? Here’s how to avoid traffic, parking fees

Modesto’s community Pride picnic may have come and gone in May, but Pride Month is not over yet, and one of the largest LGBTQ+ pride celebrations in California is still yet to come.

San Francisco Pride, among the most historic Pride celebrations in the U.S., is holding its 56th annual festival and parade the final weekend of June, closing out this year’s Pride Month with a bang.

Though visitors to San Francisco’s weekend-long party coming from the capital region are close enough to hop in their cars and drive to the Bay Area for a day trip, the festival’s organizers highly urge avoiding the streets around the celebration throughout the weekend.

Despite this, Central Valley residents still have a slew of reliable transportation options that can bring them from home straight to the San Francisco Pride festival’s entrance.

Here’s what to know if you’re planning to travel to San Francisco Pride this year.

Where and when is San Francisco Pride 2026?

San Francisco’s Pride celebrations span this coming weekend, with a two-day festival and a Sunday morning parade expected to draw more than half a million people.

The free Pride celebration at Civic Center Plaza and a large street fair in central San Francisco run from 11 a.m. to6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, and the parade will kick off Sunday’s festivities at 10:30 a.m., according to the Pride website.

Parade participants will march along Market Street, starting at Beale Street and arriving at Civic Center Plaza, 335 McAllister St., about 1.6 miles away from the start.

How can I get from Modesto to San Francisco for Pride?

The San Joaquin Valley’s and San Francisco’s train systems can drop Pride celebrants in the center of the action within roughly 2 1/2 hours of departing from the capital city.

Amtrak’s Gold Runner route, formerly known as San Joaquins, departs northbound from the Modesto Station roughly once every 3–4 hours during the festival weekend, starting at 8:44 a.m., arriving at the Richmond train station just under two hours later.

From there, travelers can transfer across the street from the Amtrak station to the Richmond BART station. Riders have two route options — the Red Line, which goes directly to the Civic Center/UN Plaza station, or the Orange Line, which requires a transfer to the Yellow Line at the MacArthur station before arriving at the Civic Center Plaza.

Both BART trips take roughly 40 minutes, but transferring from the Gold Runner to the BART or between two BART lines could add travel time. According to BART marketing representative Michelle Robertson, the Bay Area trains will have additional service around the central San Francisco area between 9:30 a.m.-11 a.m. and after 2 p.m. on both Pride days.

The same route is possible for the return, though the latest Gold Runner train leaves toward Modesto at 6:06 p.m. each day.

As of Wednesday, tickets for the Gold Runner on San Francisco Pride weekend cost $22 each direction. BART fares from the Richmond station to Civic Center Plaza are priced at $6.15 each way.

For visitors who must drive to the Pride festivities, prepaid parking reservations can be made online before the Pride weekend even begins. Numerous parking spaces around downtown San Francisco were still available on the Spot Hero parking booking site as of Wednesday, with prices starting as low as $16 for a full day.

Where should I stay in San Francisco for the Pride festival?

The city’s Pride organizers have partnered with Hilton as the official hotel partner of this year’s celebration, according to the San Francisco Pride website.

Celebrants staying in the Bay Area for the June 27-28 weekend are encouraged to book at a Hilton-branded hotel for “preferred” rates in honor of the Pride festivities. Hilton has seven hotels in the central San Francisco area near the heart of the Pride festival and parade route, according to the booking website.

As of Wednesday morning, room rates for the hotel conglomerate’s stays around downtown San Francisco ranged from $186-$276 per night for Pride weekend.

Other major hotel brands — including Marriott, IHG, Hyatt and Wyndham — as well as independent bed-and-breakfasts also operate in San Francisco’s core districts.

Google’s hotel search portal showed nightly rates for Pride weekend within walking distance of the festival and parade start around $54 for local two-star stays, and they can reach upward of $500 per night for the most luxurious offerings.

Detailed information about travel, tips for local hotels and information about the festival’s location and daily schedule are available on the San Francisco Pride website.
