Bee Book Club announces book No. 2: “I Will Greet the Sun Again,” by Khabushani

After kicking off with “Secret Harvests,” by David Mas Masumoto, the Bee Book Club will next read “I Will Greet the Sun Again,” by Khashayar J. Khabushani.

The novel’s protagonist, K, is a 9-year-old boy in Van Nuys, the son of Iranian immigrants. When he’s forcibly taken back to Iran by his father without his mother, K navigates understanding his family, his culture and himself away from the place he called home.

After returning to a post-9/11 America, he contends with what it means to be a queer, Muslim young man in California’s San Fernando Valley.

“This book is a triumph, one that will help the next generation understand our specific American childhood – how it felt to grow up with broken immigrant parents and one foot still in Iran, sitting in front of a TV in a sad apartment complex, dreaming of the good life,” Dina Nayeri’s review of the book for the Guardian stated.

The Bee Book Club will convene on June 16 at Bookish Modesto. Event details will be announced soon. Those interested in joining us for “I Will Greet the Sun Again” are asked to purchase their copies at www.bookishmodesto.com and use promo code BOOKCLUB15 to get 15% off the purchase.
