Uniquely is a Modesto Bee series that covers the moments, landmarks and personalities that define what makes living in the Central Valley so special.
It’s no secret the Modesto region has spawned its share of award-winning actors.
And that’s not even mentioning superstar writer/director/producer George Lucas, who’s in a class all his own.
Some have been particularly prolific and high profile in their film and TV roles.
At this point, one – possibly unexpected? – homegrown actor appears to be the busiest, at least according to IMDb.com (Internet Movie Database).
Dot-Marie Jones, who hails from Turlock and Hilmar, has six upcoming projects currently listed on IMDb.
Sure, it’s only one more than Emmy-nominated and Modesto-bred Timothy Olyphant. But he’s much more a household name, recognizable from his work in lauded series and films.
Also highly recognizable is Academy Award-nominated Modesto native Jeremy Renner. He’s gained widespread notoriety not just for his acting but also after a near-fatal accident in 2023 and his well-documented recovery.
Here’s a glance at what roles the above actors have coming up, according to IMDb:
Dot-Marie Jones
“The Collected”: This is described as the third in “The Collector” horror film series on IMDb, which notes it as “production unknown.” Jones is listed among the top cast members.
“Quarter”: Jones also is part of the cast for this comedy film about “... a young woman living with Type 1 diabetes” dealing with “ups and downs of her personal life,” according to IMDb. Brooke Shields and Eric Roberts also are in the movie, which stars Kelsey Bascom. Noted as in post-production, no release date is listed.
“Greg’s Going to Rehab”: She’ll be in the short film about a 16-year-old metalhead on a mission to see a concert featuring Ozzy Obsourne and Metallica. Noted as in post-production, no release date is listed.
“Feathered”: Jones plays Aunt Barb in this indie film starring Haviland Stillwell. No plot or release date is listed.
“Date”: Starring Maddie Phillips, Jones plays a character named Dino in the thriller about a model who has to “indulge her appetite” in men to keep her beauty, according to IMDb. Noted as in post-production, no release date is listed.
“Breeder”: Another thriller, Jones plays the title character in the film about a “poodle breeder obsessed with genetic perfection (who) offers an MIT dropout a bizarre proposition – she wants to breed him with her daughter,” according to IMDb. Noted as in post-production, no release date is listed.
Jones was nominated for best-guest-actress Emmys in 2011, 2012 and 2013 for her role as Coach Beiste on hit TV show “Glee.”
Timothy Olyphant
“Over Your Dead Body”: Olyphant has a co-starring role in the comedy/thriller about a married couple at a secluded cabin, with each secretly plotting to murder the other. The film is set for an April 24 release date, according to IMDb.
“Lucky”: The TV series in which a “reformed criminal is forced to confront her past and return to illicit activities for one final job...” includes Olyphant as a cast member. IMDb lists a July 15 starting date for the Apple TV+ series.
“The Five-Star Weekend”: The Peacock limited streaming series includes Olyphant as part of the ensemble cast in a show about a food influencer grappling with loss. It stars Jennifer Garner. Noted as in post-production, no release date is listed.
“The Adventures of Cliff Booth”: Olyphant reprises his role as actor James Stacy in this film starring Brad Pitt, a sequel to “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” The Netflix film is listed on IMDb as completed, but with no release date.
“Beef”: This film about a “manager of a fast-food restaurant in the Midwest (who) is wanted by his bookies,” according to IMDb, is listed as “production unknown” with Olyphant as star.
Olyphant has a 2011 best-actor Emmy nomination for his starring role in the FX series “Justified,” a 2019 nod as part of team behind “Deadwood: The Movie” and one in 2021 for guest actor in a drama series for “The Mandalorian.”
Jeremy Renner
“Mayor of Kingstown”: As previously reported in The Bee, Renner will return for the fifth and final season of this Paramount+ streaming series about a powerful family in a town dependent on the prison system. Renner stars as the title character. No date has been set for the finale it to begin.
Untitled OxyContin Project: Renner is the only cast member listed on IMDb for this film about “uncovering and revealing the truth behind the deception and misdeeds by the makers of OxyContin.” It’s listed as in preproduction.
Renner has been nominated twice for Academy Awards — best lead actor in 2010 for “The Hurt Locker” and best supporting actor in 2011 for “The Town.”
