If you’ve ever tried to get tickets to the annual ILL LIST Poetry Slam at the State Theatre and found them sold out, you’re likely not alone. It generally fills the theater early each year. But this time, tickets remained, giving you a fighting chance to join the popular show.

There are several other entertainment options coming up in the Modesto region Dec. 13-19, with the holidays at center stage.

THE ILL LIST

The ILL LIST Poetry Slam celebrates its 20th anniversary this year with the invitational at the State Theatre. The milestone event will bring back eight of the top performers over the last 20 years. The ILL LIST — which has almost always sold out but had limited tickets remaining this year — features spoken-word artists and national and international slam champions. Through three rounds of original poetry, they go head-to-head to win $1,500 in cash prizes.

Candlelight concert

The Modesto Symphony Orchestra’s annual Holiday Candlelight Concert will return to St. Stanislaus Church in Modesto. Christmas hymns and carols will be performed by the MSO, MSO Chorus and the Opus Handbell Ensemble. Daniel R. Afonso Jr. will conduct. Tickets are sold through the Gallo Center.

Jazzy holiday

Central West Ballet’s one-night-only production of “Nutcracker in Jazz” brings big-band Christmas sounds and ballet to the Gallo Center for the Arts. Tickets include a reception in the lobby after the performance.

Stella Cole hits the road with her “Christmas Dreaming” tour. The show features her new single, “Merry Christmas, Darling,“ a reimagining of The Carpenters’ classic hit. Cole will perform with strings for her Gallo Center show. Limited tickets remained available.

Riverbank holiday celebration

The Riverbank Christmas Parade and Craft Fair returns for its annual community holiday celebration. The parade begins at 5:30 p.m. in the midst of the craft fair. Santa will be available for photos during a tree-lighting ceremony following the parade.
