While temporarily closed, the Modesto Children’s Museum still will provide interactive fun for the community.

“Bringing MoChiMu to You” is a chalk art installation “that turns public sidewalks into interactive playgrounds for families, kids, and the young at heart,” a press release from the museum said.

It will “pop up” in Stanislaus and San Joaquin counties beginning Sept. 21. The museum is closed through Sept. 26 for annual cleaning and maintenance.

Each display will be “inspired by a different MoChiMu exhibit — from the splashy fun of the Water Lab to the whimsical magic of the Color Story Train,” the release said. “The artworks are designed to be walked on, played through, and joyfully explored — inviting all ages to move, imagine, and connect.”

The locations are planned on sidewalks at Bookish/the Virginia Trail in Modesto; Meadow and Rose Book Boutique in Turlock; Austin’s Coffee Crafters, Primos Restaurant & Tequila Bar, The Beauty Barr of Ripon and Ripon Social Restaurant in Ripon; and the Sunday clothing boutique, Fox & Mane and Pencie & Ginger Boutique in Escalon.

Each piece is created by a local artist and includes interactive prompts like “jump,” “spin” or “pretend,” the release said.

Artists were selected by the Stanislaus Arts Council. The installations will be up through Sept. 26, weather permitting.

“Let’s take play to the streets — because learning doesn’t stop when the doors close,” the release said. “It just finds a new path.”
