WOW Fest brings movies by, about women into focus

Mark your calendars for the new Women of the West Film Festival, or WOW Fest, Sept. 11.

The event at downtown Modesto’s State Theatre will screen short and feature films about and/or by women. The new festival, which is being spearheaded by the State and female community leaders, is bringing in the star of the Oscar-winning short documentary “Inocente.” The 2012 film followed a 15-year-old homeless and undocumented girl who aspired to be an artist. The festival will also include a reception, live music and refreshments.

Carolyn Wonderland

Blues artist Carolyn Wonderland, described as “Janis Joplin meets Bonnie Raitt,” comes to play the State Theatre on Aug. 29.

The Uncle Lonny Presents show also will feature Modesto blues favorites Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame. Born and raised in Texas, Wonderland is known for her blues vocals and guitar. She has shared the stage with Los Lobos, Robert Earl Keen, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Buddy Guy, Johnny Winter, Bob Dylan and more.

First Friday in the Park

Foothills trio Plan B will play the First Friday in the Park series this weekend in Murphys.

The band – featuring guitarist Ken Rojas, bassist Vince Rojas and drummer Jim Bailey – plays rock hits from the 1950s to the ’70s. The show is part of the ongoing First Friday series from the Murphys Community Club. The summer series runs through September the first Friday of every month at Murphys Community Park. People are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets for the show.

The music starts at 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7. Dinner from Sierra Hills & Natural Foods Markets will be available for purchase starting at 4 p.m. Admission is free; dinner tickets are $10. Call 209-728-8183 or visit http://visitmurphys.com.
