‘Milestone’ reached for Modesto Children’s Museum planned for downtown
The planned Modesto Children’s Museum has reached “a major fundraising milestone.”
More than $9 million raised for the downtown facility, according to a press release.
In addition, Chelsie Webster has been named as the museum’s Chief Executive Officer, “an accomplished museum leader with demonstrated success in education and programming,” according to the release.
The “Launch The Adventure” campaign that began in August needed $600,000 more to hit its goal late last year when a grant from The Boyett Family Foundation was offered. The grant matched all donations up to $125,000 through the end of the year, The Bee reported in November.
Construction is underway to refurbish the 928 11th St. location. The two-story, roughly 11,500-square-foot space previously housed the Heart & Soul coffeehouse.
The museum is expected to open this summer.
“From the very beginning this has been a community-driven project, and it is becoming a reality because of our generous donors, volunteers, and supporters,” Museum Board President Katie Barber said.
While the initial goal has been met, fundraising will continue for ongoing programming, resources, fresh exhibits and more.
Donations can be made at www.modestochildrensmuseum.org/donate or mailed to Modesto Children’s Museum, 1509 K St., #119, Modesto, CA 95354.
The museum will include water, air and light labs, an art studio/maker space, and areas called Valley Proud, Tall Tales, Adventure and Little Rainbows.
Webster began as CEO on Feb. 1. She’s held positions for eight years at the Center of Science and Industry in Columbus, Ohio, and led a team of more than 60 people in the museum’s programming department.
“I have spent many years in the museum world and have never come across a more inspiring story than that of (the) Modesto Children’s Museum,” Webster said in the release. “To join with the people of Modesto and lead this larger-than-life vision to fruition is a true honor. I could not be more excited to get started.”
