Annual food sampling event returns. Wine and film also among Modesto area entertainment

Local restaurant fare can be sampled by the public at the annual Taste of Oakdale. The State Theatre will throw a wine mixer and film screening, as well as offer a classic John Wayne film. Those are among the entertainment options in the Modesto region Aug 20-26.

Food tasting

The 14th annual Taste of Oakdale returns with 12 of the city’s restaurants offering samples of their food in one place. Held by the Oakdale Chamber of Commerce, it’s a chance for restaurants to introduce new culinary choices and for the community to explore local dining.

Wine mixer and a movie

The State Theatre in Modesto will present its Catalina Wine Mixer and “Step Brothers” screening. The event includes wine tasting, hors d’oeuvres, live entertainment and viewing of the 2008 comedy starring Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly.

“The Searchers”

The Modesto Film Society presents the classic John Wayne movie “The Searchers.” The 1956 Western will be shown at the State Theatre in downtown Modesto. In the film, Wayne’s character sets out to find his captured niece and her adopted brother.

Yosemite exhibit

The Yosemite Renaissance 37 exhibit is on view in the Lobby Galleries at the Carnegie Arts Center in Turlock. The exhibit showcases more than 50 artists whose works were inspired by Yosemite National Park and the California Sierra Nevada region. There are oil paintings, watercolors, photographs, fabric arts and handmade books. Admission to the Lobby Galleries is free.
