Music, stories and more of Paul McCartney coming to Modesto’s State Theatre
Take a “Stroll Down Penny Lane” at the State Theatre in Modesto during a live concert tribute to Paul McCartney. There also will be a tribute show to Elton John, among other entertainment options from July 30 to Aug. 6.
McCartney tribute
The State Theatre presents “Stroll Down Penny Lane,” a live performance with accompanying films of the music of iconic songwriter Paul McCartney. Songs span McCartney’s career, from early influences to The Beatles, through the Wings period and beyond. The show includes stories, images and animation.

“$35 and a Dream”
A staged reading of “$35 and a Dream: The Maddox Brothers & Rose” will be held at Modesto Junior College. Written by Arnold Anthony Schmidt and Ken White and directed by Jim Johnson, it’s the story of the Central Valley family group from its Dust Bowl beginnings to the Grand Ole Opry. It tells of the group’s influence on country, rockabilly and rock ‘n’ roll. Starting in the 1940s, Rose Maddox played with Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, Elvis Presley and Bob Wills. Audiences also will hear some of the group’s music.

Cabaret concert
The Synergy Chamber Players play the Mistlin Gallery’s Cabaret Concert. The event features classical and contemporary music, as well as wine and desserts. Throughout the evening, artist Nicole Slater will paint her interpretation of the musical program as it’s played.

Elton John tribute
Red Tie Arts presents a tribute to Elton John in Ripon. Las Vegas-based performer Joey Reidel performs, complete with the rocker’s signature outrageous costumes. A preshow dinner with wine tasting and desserts is optional, with doors opening at 6:30 p.m.
