This county fair has a special bounce; more Modesto, Mother Lode region entertainment
The frogs will be jumping in Calaveras County as its annual fair returns. Improv comedy at the Gallo Center, a living history event and art exhibits also are set in the Modesto and Mother Lode regions from May 14-20. Here’s a look at some of what’s planned.
Jumping Frog Jubilee
The jumping frog competition highlights the Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee. The county fair also features food, exhibits, entertainment, a rodeo, destruction derby, livestock, arena events, vendor booths and more.

“Whose Live Anyway?”
The improv comedy show “Whose Live Anyway?” returns to the Gallo Center with current cast members of the TV show Ryan Stiles, Greg Proops, Jeff B. Davis and Joel Murray. The comedy and song show is based on audience suggestions. It also showcases some of the improv games made famous on the TV show as well as some new ones. Only limited seats remained available at press time.

Diggins Tent Town
Columbia State Historic Park’s living history event, Diggins Tent Town, returns with 150 costumed volunteer re-enactors. Visitors will experience an 1850s mining camp re-created with period clothing, as well as food and entertainment.

“Trash to Treasure”
The Mistlin Gallery exhibit “Trash to Treasures: Found Object Art, Upcycled, Repurposed, Recycled Art” looks to bring awareness to everyday items that can be reused and repurposed as an alternative to throwing them away. A reception with prize awards will be held during the Third Thursday Art Walk on May 19, 5 to 8 p.m.

“Farms & Fields”
The Carnegie Arts Center has opened a new exhibit of works by regional artists in the Lobby Gallery, “Farms & Fields.” The juried, all-media show celebrates the variety and importance of agriculture in the Central Valley. There are 54 works by 32 artists from throughout Northern and Central California.
