Ready for a lightsaber battle? Where, when to celebrate “Star Wars” day in Modesto

All things “Star Wars” will be celebrated in Modesto on the day universally dubbed “May the Fourth Be With You.”

Modesto native George Lucas’ iconic film series will be marked with cosplayers, fan groups and lightsaber battles on Wednesday, May 4, at Tenth Street Plaza, according to a press release from promoter Middagh Goodwin.

Invited to the event is the 501st Legion’s Central California Garrison, Central Valley Cosplay, the Wolves of Mandalore, the Rebel Legion and other “Star Wars” fan groups, according to the release. Local bands Aware and Horizon Point also will perform in the plaza.

There will be lightsaber battles when the sun goes down, and all are encouraged to cosplay as their favorite “Star Wars” characters, the release said. Food and drink specials are planned at Fuzio, Ralston’s Goat, T-Cups and Graffiti Dogs.

The free celebration begins at 5 p.m. Modesto proclaimed May the Fourth as Star Wars Day in 2016, the release said, and there will be a public reading of the proclamation at 7 p.m. A lightsaber battle is planned at around 8 p.m.
