In brief: Modesto Junior College dance program presents ‘Off the Beat 6’

The Modesto Junior College dance program gets a groove on this summer with the two “Off the Beat 6 – Hip Hop Dance Concert” shows this week.

The concert will feature rhythm and blues, pop and hip-hop music from 1995 to 2005 by artists including LL Cool J, Chingy, Ludacris, Usher, Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC, Ashanti, Destiny’s Child and more. The show will feature a cast of more than 50, performing moves choreographed by artistic director and MJC dance instructor Kim T. Davis and student choreographers Blair Pope, Benny Gallegos, Nick Bentley, Andrew Merrill and Rene Matute. The OTB 6 program also will feature choreography by local artist Mario Robeldo and Nhan Ho from California State University, Sacramento.

Shows will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 8, and Thursday, July 9, in the auditorium of the Performing and Media Arts Center on the MJC East Campus. Tickets are $10 general admission and $8 for students of all ages and seniors. More at www.mjc.tix.com.

Mistlin Gallery summer arts camps

The Mistlin Gallery continues its summer arts camps for all ages. The camps are aimed at helping students explore a variety of styles and media. The camps continue with Fasion Art Camps for Tweens (ages 10-14) July 13-17; Kindergarten Art Camp (ages 4-6) July 20-23; 3D Junior Art Camp (ages 7-10) July 27-31; and All Ages Art Camp (ages 3 and up) Aug. 3-7. Chella Gonsalves

Works by Modesto artist Chella Gonsalves have been selected for the Contemporary Art Exhibition 2015-2016. Prolific area artist Gonsalves’ pieces “Young Almonds” and “State Fair Tractor” were chosen by Sen. Cathleen Galgiani, D-Manteca, to represent her district in the exhibit. As part of the selection, Gonsalves’ work will be on display in the Legislative Office Building in Sacramento in the yearlong California Contemporary Art Collection.
