In brief: Dance companies take to the stages
Dance recital season has stepped up this weekend.
Three Modesto dance studios are among those putting on shows. First up 5678 Dance Studio continues its 21st annual dance recital, “Applause.” The show will feature dancers ages 1 to 70 performing ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary and hip-hop. The recitals begin Thursday, June 25, and run through Saturday, June 27, at the Gallo Center for the Arts. Tickets are $16-$25. Call (209) 338-2100 or visit www.galloarts.org.
Strut Performing Arts presents the dance production “Rock The Ages” at the State Theatre on Friday-Sunday, June 26-28. The show will feature choreography, musical performances and popular rock music from the 1940s through today. More than 100 dancers will take part in the production. Tickets are $10. The Dance Factory presents its “Show in the Park” Friday, June 26, at the Mancini Bowl in Graceada Park. The end-of-the-year show will feature ballet, tap, jazz and contemporary dance. The event is free and open to the public. Call (209) 523-1032.
Gallo Center play auditions
The Gallo Center for the Arts is holding open auditions for roles in the children’s musical “Molly Bloom – Lately.”
The production, based on a book by Ashleigh Catsos with music by Penny Luedtke, follows a third-grade girl who is teased for her size. The touring show will be staged for students in kindergarten through fifth grades. There are two two male roles and two female roles (both for ages 17 to 25) available. Actors will be paid $50 per performance ($75 for performances outside of the Gallo Center district). Performances will be during school hours from October 2015 to June 2016.
Auditions will be at 4 p.m. July 7 at downtown Modesto’s Prospect Theatre, 1214 K St. Actors should bring a song of their choosing and will be asked to read from the script. For more, email jjohnson@galloarts.org.
Halestorm show scheduled
Grammy-winning hard rock act Halestorm is coming to Modesto Center Plaza this fall.
The group will play a Modesto show Oct. 14. Tickets for the all-ages show are on sale now and are $26.50 advance/$30 gate.
