In brief: Open house for Modesto Sound

An open house will be held June 27 to celebrate the new home for Modesto Sound, a nonprofit that helps students ages 13 through 22 learn the basics of recording.

Modesto Sound was housed for three years at Gregori High School. The new locations is at 110 Santa Barbara Ave., off Yosemite Boulevard.

Since its inception, more than 500 artists have recorded at Modesto Sound. Others have trained on the technical side in the studio by staging live concerts and by learning about radio engineering. The nonprofit is funded through donations, grants and recording fees ranging from $20 to $40.

The open house will be from noon to 3 p.m. at the new home for the organization that provides job training for youths, professional recording and live sound services.

Food and refreshments, music, activities and tours by the board of directors will be offered during the event.

‘Rebel’ at the State

James Dean plays Jim Stark, a rebellious young man with a troubled past, in the next installment of the Modesto Film Society’s series at the State Theatre.

“Rebel Without a Cause” scored Academy Award nominations for Natalie Wood and Sal Mineo, as well as for director Nicholas Ray. The film was chosen as one of the Top 100 American Films by the American Film Institute.

The 1955 film will screen at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 21, at the State, 1307 J St., Modesto. Tickets are $8. Call (209) 527-4697.

Dance Factory show

The Dance Factory presents its “Show in the Park” on June 26, featuring ballet, tap, jazz and contemporary dance.

The group performs its end-of-year show at Mancini Bowl in Graceada Park, 401 Needham St., Modesto, at 7:30 p.m. June 26.

Life in Balance Concert

Multiplatinum songwriter Alex Kash with the band Grateful will appear in concert Sunday, June 28, at Columbia Nursery in Sonora for the Life in Balance Concert.

Kash has written songs for Pat Travers and Journey and worked with artists such as Van Morrison, Sly Stone and Pablo Cruise. He will appear at the Sonora event with the band Grateful.

The concert is at 1 p.m. at the nursery, 22004 Parrots Ferry Road, Sonora. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased in advance by calling (209) 532-5303.

Donell Jones with Jon B.

Recording artist Donell Jones plays a show July 25 at the Bob Hope Theatre in Stockton with musician Jon B.

R&B singer Jones’ hits include “U Know What’s Up” (featuring the late Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes of TLC), “Where I Wanna Be” and a cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Knocks Me Off My Feet.” Grammy-nominated artist Jon B is a songwriter and producer with several gold and platinum records.

Doors open at 7 p.m. for the 8 p.m. show at the Bob Hope Theatre, 242 E. Main St., Stockton. Tickets are $37.50-$67.50 at the Stockton Arena box office or ticketmaster.com.

Summertime tours

The Angels Camp Museum will offer docent-led summertime tours for the month of July.

The guided tours will take visitors through the museum’s collections of wagons and carriages. Docents will explain the gold country history of Angels Camp and the Mother Lode region. Also among the attractions are two steam traction engines and exhibits highlighting mining equipment such as an overshot water-wheel in its original location, a hydraulic monitor, drills, ore cars and a working model of a stamp mill.

Tours are 1-2 p.m. on July 11, 18 and 25 and are free with museum admission, $5 adults, $2.50 ages 5 to 11, free age 4 and under. The museum is at 753 S. Main St., Angels Camp.
