What Sonora’s Sierra Rep has decided about the remainder of its 2020 season
Sierra Repertory Theatre has canceled the remainder of its 2020 season because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Earlier in the pandemic shutdown, they had hoped for a September re-opening, according to a May press release.
“We share the disappointment of these cancellations with our audience, our artists, our creative teams, our staff and our students,” said a press release sent last week from the Sonora company.
“Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to support the theatre through this period until we are able to open our doors again,” the release said.
SRT had planned on offering three shows at the end of the season, according to the release — a to-be-decided musical, “Elf The Musical” and “Meet Me in St Louis: A Live Radio Play.”
Directors send out plea for donations
Producing Artistic Director Scott Viets and Associate Artistic Director Jerry Lee issued a joint statement in the release saying: “Canceling a season is hard. We know that ... We are not planning on going anywhere soon but, and we cannot emphasize this enough, we need your help. Sierra Rep has served our community for forty years and we look forward to the next forty. Please continue to advocate for us, please donate, and please help us come back stronger than ever.”
The company also asked that anyone holding tickets to canceled shows donate the value back to Sierra Rep.
Sierra Rep has two theaters, one in Sonora and one in Columbia. The release said the company will use the dark time to “make necessary improvements to our spaces so that audiences can come back to the best version of SRT yet.”
SRT also will cancel or postpone its educational workshops, according to the release, until the 2021 season.
