Turlock’s Carnegie Arts Center will go virtual for youth show; seeking entries now
The Carnegie Arts Center in Turlock is seeking entries for planned exhibits, both virtual and – as is the hope – at the gallery.
“Ready, Set, Show!” is the center’s annual youth art exhibition for ages 5-18 from Stanislaus, Merced and San Joaquin counties. Entries must be received by May 24, according to a press release, and be submitted via email to information@carnegiartsturlock.org.
The exhibition should be available to view on the Carnegie’s website from June 1 throughout the summer.
Entries are limited to a maximum of three per student. Details and entry forms are available on the Call for Entries page of the Carnegie’s website, www.carnegieartsturlock.org.
To encourage participation, fees for entries and admission have been waived for the youth exhibit, according to the release.
“This will be our sixth year exhibiting works by school-age artists,” Carnegie Director Lisa McDermott said in the release. “It is new territory to be mounting an online exhibition, but with school closures and stay-at-home orders, we think it is important to do something to encourage young artists in our region.”
Carnegie hopes to reopen for showcase
The Carnegie has been closed to the public since mid-March because of the coronavirus pandemic. McDermott said the center hopes to reopen by July for its annual Carnegie Art Showcase.
That exhibit planned for the Ferrari Gallery will feature new works by California artists in a variety of media. Scheduled to be on view from July 8 to Aug. 30, entries for the showcase are now being accepted through June 5, according to another press release.
McDermott said with changing regulations regarding social distancing and public gatherings, the center may have to adjust. “We’ve moved a couple of exhibitions online while the galleries have been closed since mid-March,” she said. “The response to that has been good, but we really hope to return to the ‘in-person’ experience with this exhibition.”
Artists age 18 or older, may submit their work via SmarterEntry.com with a fee of $20 per entry. Artists can review rules and procedures on the Carnegie’s website.
Prizes totaling more than $2,300 will be awarded by the three artists who will judge the exhibition: Susanne French, ceramic artist and art gallery director at Merced College; Susan Stephenson, painter and assistant professor of art at Cal State Stanislaus; and Young Suh, photographer and associate professor of art at UC Davis.
The Carnegie Arts Center is at 250 N. Broadway in Turlock. When open, hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays-Saturdays; 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Fridays; and noon to 4 p.m. Sundays.
