Settle in on your couch or comfy chair and enjoy the music of local artists this weekend — while staying safely inside your home.

Modesto Couchfest is Saturday and Sunday, May 2-3, a weekend of live-streaming music from local musicians who would have performed at the fourth annual Porchfest had that annual event not been derailed by the coronavirus pandemic.

Modesto Porchfest organizers wanted to give the community and the artists a chance to still enjoy the music, so came up with the Couchfest idea, said co-organizer Kate Trompetter.

“Once we decided to cancel, we felt compelled to offer an alternative to the community — something we could manage even during such complicated times,” she said in an April press release.

They also wanted to help the artists raise some money. “Organizers invite you to listen, but especially encourage you to tip,” the release said.

Performers will provide information to connect listeners to their payment platforms such as Venmo, Paypal or others for virtual tipping, Trompetter said.

Nearly 40 local musicians will live-stream 30-minute sets throughout the weekend. Information on how to tune in to the event can be found at modestoporchfest.com.

Organizers also are selling block print Couchfest postcards, designed by local artist Erin Black, for a $5 donation.

Ongoing Porchfest sponsor Collins Electric was going to be joined this year by American Chevrolet, Trompetter said. “They, along with ModestoView, have all generously agreed to let us use some of their funds to match what we raise selling postcards up to $500.”

All money raised will go to tipping musicians.
