Closed State Theatre offers virtual cinema to help raise funds; gallery shows classes
The State Theatre is offering virtual cinema, with some funds raised from the films going back to the Modesto venue.
At the also-closed Mistlin Gallery, they’re offering daily drawing lessons via email.
The State effort is to help support the nonprofit theater shuttered by the coronavirus pandemic.
“While The State is temporarily closed, we wanted to make sure our patrons still get their movie fix,” according to an email.
“Each distributor is a little different so make sure that you follow the directions closely,” the email notes.
Five films are available. The State will receive 100% of the proceeds on two of the films if ordered by Thursday, April 2: “Once Were Brothers” and “The Whistlers.” After that, the State will get 50% of the proceeds for those two films.
The art house theater also will get 50% of the proceeds for “Corpus Christi,” “The Wild Goose Lake” and “Phoenix, Oregon.”
About the films
“Once Were Brothers” is a look at Robbie Robertson and his classic rock group The Band. It’s Robertson’s personal journey, overcoming adversity and finding the four other men who would become his brothers in music.
“The Whistlers” is about a Romanian police officer and mafia whistle blower. He is under police surveillance and by using coded language continues to communicate with mobsters to get the only person out of prison who knows where 30 millions of euros are hidden.
“Phoenix, Oregon” is a comedy about two midlife friends who seize an opportunity to reinvent their lives, quitting their jobs to restore an old bowling alley.
“The Wild Goose Lake” follows a gangster on the run who sacrifices everything for his family and a woman he meets while on the lam.
“Corpus Christi” is about a reformed criminal prevented from applying to the seminary after his release, so he dresses as a priest and ministers a small town parish.
To purchase a film, go the theater’s website at www.thestate.org and click on virtual screenings in the upper right menu option.
Mistlin drawing classes

A lesson and easy exercise for people to work on at their own pace, will arrive in their inbox, the email said.
