Famed Black History Month speaker, music, more events, entertainment await in Modesto
Tommie Smith
Athlete, activist and educator Tommie Smith will speak at Cal State Stanislaus on “The Power of a Dream” in observance of Black History Month. Smith is renowned for increasing awareness of racial injustice when he and John Carlos raised their clenched fists on the medalist podium at the 1968 Olympics. Following the talk, Smith will sign copies of his autobiography “Silent Gesture.”

Selah
Gospel group Selah brings its music to the Gallo Center. Selah — Todd Smith, Allan Hall and Amy Perry — has been together for 20 years and has eight Gospel Music Association Dove Awards. The group’s hits include “You Raise Me Up” and “Wonderful, Merciful Savior.”

Leo Kottke
The State Theatre presents an Evening with Leo Kottke. The acoustic guitarist’s major-label debut was 1971’s “Mudlark.” Records like 1972’s “Greenhouse” and 1973’s “My Feet Are Smiling” and “Ice Water” found him branching out with guest musicians.

Ernie Bucio benefit
This annual fundraising music event provides scholarships to music students at Modesto Junior College. Multiple bands will play inside and outside at the Barkin’ Dog Grill. The benefit is in memory of late local musician Ernie Bucio as well as Evin Yadegar, co-founder of Barkin’ Dog Grill.
