Winter on stage
Cirque Flip Fabrique’s “Blizzard” program takes a journey on stage through the dead of winter. The group is a circus company based in Québec. The troupe crafts contemporary circus shows to create visual poetry for the audience.

Folk-country music comes to the Turlock Community Theatre from traditional American musician Tom Russell. A singer-songwriter, painter and essayist, Russell’s songs have been recorded by Johnny Cash, Doug Sahm, Nanci Griffith, k.d. lang, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Ian Tyson, Iris Dement, Joe Ely and others.

The Central California Art Association and Mistlin Gallery presents “The Modestan: A Photographic Portrait of Modesto, 1975–2015,” featuring photographs by Adrian Mendoza. An artist reception at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, will feature a slide show and lecture by Mendoza, “#OKBoomer: 45 Years of Photography.”

Oscar short films
Short films nominated for Oscars will be screened at the State Theatre over the next week. Set to be shown on the downtown Modesto venue’s new Jewel screen are the animation, live action and documentary shorts. This year’s Academy Awards will be televised on Feb. 9.

Chinese New Year, Part 1
The Modesto Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods Department celebrates the Year of the Rat, along with the Stanislaus Chinese Culture Society. There will be performances, cultural dances, music, martial arts, speakers, demonstrations and refreshments.

Chinese New Year, Part 2
The Stanislaus Chinese Association presents its Year of the Rat celebration on Saturday, as well. There will be food, entertainment, a raffle and more. While the celebration begins at 5 p.m., there will be free cultural crafts for kids from 2-4 p.m.
