Comedy meets symphony
Rainer Hersch melds comedy with symphonic music. The Brit will be guest conductor and comedian at the Modesto Symphony Orchestra’s “Comedy Meets the Symphony Orchestra” show today. Hersch has made a name for himself bringing laughter to the traditionally staid world of classical music, saying the often buttoned-up world of Bach and Beethoven is a “perfect vehicle” for comedy.

‘So Good for the Soul’
Gallo Center for the Arts officially ends its 2014-15 season on Saturday with the “So Good for the Soul” concert. Performed by a cast of eight Broadway-savvy entertainers and their band, the event features 30 classic hits, including “My Girl,” “I Heard it Through the Grapevine,” “Reach Out,” “Shop Around,” “Dancin’ in the Street,” “Stop, in the Name of Love,” “Ain’t Nothin’ Like the Real Thing” and more.

Scottish Highland Games
The 34th annual Modesto Scottish Highland Games and Celtic Festival is presented Saturday by Modesto’s St. Andrews Society. This family fest features athletic events, bagpipers, Celtic music, children’s games, dancing, heritage and history information, Avenue of the Clans, a California challenge shinty match, vendors, food and beverage booths.

Live in the Cellar
A new Live in the Cellar monthly concert series will be held at Greens restaurant. The series begins today with gold country favorites Faux Renwah. The family band of multi-instrumentalists plays a mix of old-time Gold Rush songs, 1960s hits and original tunes.

Brews, Blues & BBQ
A benefit on Saturday will bring Brews, Blues and BBQ to a benefit for Hope Haven West. The concert and food event will feature music by the Sun Downers and Slingshot, along with a barbecue dinner, craft beers and wines. Hope Haven West is a nonprofit Modesto organization dedicated to providing mobility to the disabled poor in developing countries.

MoBand returns
The rousing summer concert-party series from the Modesto Band of Stanislaus County – affectionately known as MoBand – continues its 96th season on Thursday. The outdoor listening and dining experience brings out thousands each week for its six-show run. This week, the band goes on “Cruise Control,” with a program of music from classic rock acts like Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly, Bobby Darin and more.
