See Modesto’s Timothy Olyphant back as Seth Bullock in HBO’s new ‘Deadwood’ trailer
Modesto-raised actor Timothy Olyphant has strapped back on his six-shooter and stepped back into “Deadwood.”
The teaser trailer for the long-anticipated movie based on the HBO series “Deadwood” was released Thursday, the 15th anniversary of the original show’s debut. The movie will premiere on the premium cable channel May 31.
Olyphant, who grew up in Modesto and graduated from Beyer High School, returns to the role of straight-shooting, real-life lawman Seth Bullock in the gritty Western series. “Deadwood” ran for three seasons on HBO, from 2004 to 2006, racking up eight Emmy Award wins.
The show from acclaimed creator David Milch (“Hill Street Blues,” “NYPD Blue”) is a fictional account of life in the Western town of Deadwood, South Dakota, during the 1870s. Returning for the film are Olyphant as Sheriff Seth Bullock and Ian McShane as real-life saloon owner Al Swearengen, as well as many of the show’s other cast.
The movie will pick up about a decade after the show ended, with the characters reuniting in Deadwood to celebrate South Dakota’s statehood in late 1889.
According to a press release about the film from HBO, “Former rivalries are reignited, alliances are tested and old wounds reopened as all are left to navigate the inevitable changes that modernity and time have wrought.”
Rumors about a possible “Deadwood” movie have swirled since it was canceled. HBO officially announced the movie was in production last July during the Television Critics Association summer press tour.
Since “Deadwood” went off the air, Olyphant has kept busy on various other film and TV projects. He spent six seasons on the FX series “Justified,” and earned an Emmy nomination for his leading role as Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens. He is currently the star of the Netflix comedy “Santa Clarita Diet” alongside Drew Barrymore. The show will return for its third season March 29.
