Turlock is launching its own downtown art walk series called Art Around Town.

The free, family-friendly evening events in downtown Turlock will celebrate the city’s arts and entertainment scenes with music, exhibits, food and more. The walks kick off Thursday, May 14. The series will take place from 6-9 p.m. the second Thursday of May, July and September.

The art walk will include galleries and businesses which will feature local artwork, musicians and more around Main Street. Among the businesses to be open for the first Art Around Town are the Carnegie Arts Center, 250 N. Broadway; First Street Gallery & Frame Co., 226 N. First St.; Art Space on Main, 135 W. Main St.; The Gallery Finesse, 128 N. Center St.; The Community Art Gallery at Rex Klein Insurance Services, 132 S. Center St.; and Colossal Tattoo, 429 E. Main St.

‘Forbidden Broadway’

The follies and foibles of the Great White Way are on view in the long-running comedic revue “Forbidden Broadway.”

The show’s 30th anniversary tour stops by the Gallo Center for the Arts on Friday, May 8. The show has become New York’s longest-running musical comedy revue. Broadway productions past and present are parodied, from “Wicked” to “Mary Poppins.” The show has won Tony, Drama Desk, Obie and Outer Critics Circle awards.

Film series returns

The NY Film Critic Series returns with the first feature film from documentarian Amy Berg, “Every Secret Thing,” on Tuesday, May 12.

The movie from the director “West of Memphis” and “Deliver Us From Evil” features Diane Lane, Elizabeth Banks, Dakota Fanning and Common. The crime drama centers on the investigation into a missing 3-year-old girl taken in a New York suburb. The project was produced by Oscar winner Frances McDormand and written by acclaimed screenwriter Nicole Holofcener. Following the presentation will be an on-screen Q&A lead by Rolling Stone film critic Peter Travers with the film’s stars Diane Lane, Dakota Fanning and Amy Berg and producer Frances McDormand.

‘Spamalot’ in Merced

Join King Arthur’s outrageous adventures in the musical comedy “Monty Python’s Spamalot” starting this weekend at Playhouse Merced.

The show is billed as lovingly “ripped off” from the 1975 film “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” and chronicles, through song and dance, King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table’s quest to find the Holy Grail. The Merced production is directed by Rob Hypes, musically directed by Darrel Lingenfelter, choreographed by Corey Strauss and Noelle Chandler, and stars Ryan Dziadosz as King Arthur, Sara Sweatt as Lady of the Lake, Sergio Lopez as Patsy, RC Essig as Lancelot, Corey Strauss as Sir Robin and others.

Mistlin Spring Member Show to open

The Central California Art Association opens its Spring Member Show this next week at the Mistlin Gallery.

The show will run Tuesday, May 12, to June 12. The exhibit’s public reception will be on the Third Thursday Art Walk from 5-9 p.m. May 21. Music and refreshments will be available during the free Art Walk event. Tricia Spenker serves as the show host. The gallery is open 11:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and noon-4 p.m. Saturday. Wine, beer and food at benefit for MJC

The Modesto Junior College Foundation is hosting its annual fundraiser for athletics Friday, May 8.

The 16th annual Celebrate MJC Wine, Beer and Gourmet Food Tasting will feature samples, refreshments, live music by Patty Castillo Davis and a silent auction. The funds will go to help MJC’s 21 athletic programs. Area wineries, breweries and restaurants will be on hand for tastings.

The event is from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in the Mary Stuart Rogers Student Learning Center on West Campus. Tickets are $35 per person for the 21-and-over event. Call (209) 575-6068.

Miranda Sings in Stockton

YouTube sensation Miranda Sings brings her comedy, songs, magic tricks and more to Stockton’s Bob Hope Theatre on Thursday, May 14.

The online superstar has more than 60 million views on YouTube and has performed her one-woman show internationally. Miranda Sings is an Internet character created by American comedian, actress and singer Colleen Ballinger.
