Townsend Opera’s ‘Tosca’

Townsend Opera closes its season with a performance of Giacomo Puccini’s thriller “Tosca.” The production will be set in 1940s Italy as it tells the story of a deadly love triangle and political intrigue. Soprano Jill Gardner plays the title character, with tenor John Pickle as her lover, Cavaradossi, and baritone Zeffin Hollis as the corrupt chief of police, Scarpia. Modesto native Max Hosmer, who now lives in Colorado, will make his homecoming performance as the character of Spoletta, a police agent.

Senior Spotlight

The Senior Spotlight celebrates its 40th anniversary in style. The annual senior talent show and fundraiser will honor “Seniors on Broadway” this year with performances of music from such hits as “Fiddler on the Roof,” Guys and Dolls,” “South Pacific,” “Phantom of the Opera” and more. Veteran area performer and arts advocate Grace Lieberman produces the event and returns to emcee this year. Proceeds benefit the Senior Advocacy Network – Senior Law Project.

“King of R&B” R. Kelly stops by the Stockton Arena with some famous friends. ‘From White Plains’

San Francisco’s New Conservatory Theatre Center returns to the region with a tour of its production “From White Plains.” The anti-bullying play is part of the company’s Pride on Tour outreach and education efforts on LGBT issues. The piece explores the limits of forgiveness when a young director wins an Oscar for a film based on his experience of violent childhood bullying and then calls out his tormentor by name in his acceptance speech.

Cinco de Mayo parade

The annual South Modesto Businesses United-sponsored parade returns to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. The colorful and popular event will includes floats featuring area youth groups, live entertainment, music and much more. South Modesto Businesses United is a nonprofit group aimed at empowering and improving south Modesto.

‘The Mask You Live In’

The new documentary “The Mask You Live In” explores the impact of our culture’s definition of masculinity on boys and young men. The project is the follow-up from documentarian Jennifer Siebel Newsom, who last helmed 2011’s “Miss Representation” about media representations of women. The screening will be followed by a community panel discussion lead by Center for Human Services spokeswoman Kate Trompetter.
